US–Mexico is one of the most competitive air markets in the world, which means fares are usually keen and occasionally brutal. Almost all of the volatility comes from three periods. Knowing which one you are booking into is worth more than every “book on a Tuesday” tip ever written.
1. Christmas and New Year — the big one
This is family travel, not tourism, and it behaves differently. Mexican-American families travel home in volume from Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, Dallas and Phoenix, and the demand is concentrated on the city routes — Mexico City, Guadalajara, León, Morelia — rather than the resorts.
Fares roughly double, and the cheapest buckets are gone months in advance. If you are flying between about December 15 and January 6, book it five or six months out. Waiting does not help on this one; it has never helped.
2. Semana Santa — invisible on a US calendar
Holy Week is one of the largest domestic travel periods in Mexico, and it moves every year with Easter. Because it is not a US holiday, Americans routinely book into it without realising, then wonder why the fare is what it is.
It affects both the city routes and the beaches, and it fills domestic connections inside Mexico as thoroughly as it fills the international ones. If your trip touches Holy Week, check the dates before you plan around them.
3. US spring break — the resort spike
March, and it hits Cancún, Los Cabos and Puerto Vallarta specifically. This is the one peak that is purely American, and it is sharp: the same Cancún fare can be two or three times its February price for a week in the middle of March.
The quiet months
For the beaches: May and early June, when the weather is still good and the winter crowd has gone. September and October are cheaper still and carry the highest hurricane risk on the Caribbean coast — that is a real trade, not a scare, and it is the point at which travel insurance stops being optional.
For Mexico City and Guadalajara: the rainy season, June to September. The rain arrives as heavy afternoon storms rather than all-day weather, and the fares are the best of the year.
The thing that costs more than the fare
Low-cost carriers dominate this market and price bags separately, aggressively, and with cabin-bag sizing enforced far more strictly than US domestic travellers are used to. On the family routes — where people genuinely do travel with two large bags each in both directions — the cheapest advertised ticket is regularly not the cheapest trip.
Price the fare and the baggage as one number. It is the single most common mistake on this corridor, and unlike the seasonal peaks it is entirely avoidable.
One entry note
Mexico has moved away from the paper FMM tourist card at most airports. Your permitted stay may be stamped or recorded digitally instead. Check what you were given before you leave the airport — it matters on the way out, and sorting it out at departure is not the moment you want to discover it.
