Booking Tips

1 Christmas, Semana Santa and US spring break are the three peaks that matter — they sell out first and cost the most
2 Low-cost carriers dominate this market and price bags separately; the cheapest advertised fare is frequently not the cheapest trip once bags are added
3 Mexico no longer issues the paper FMM card at most airports — check what entry record you were given before leaving the terminal, because it matters on departure
4 Hurricane season on the Caribbean coast runs June to November, with the real risk in September and October

Flights to Mexico — frequently asked questions

No visa is required for tourism. You will complete an entry process on arrival and be granted a specific permitted stay. Mexico has moved away from the paper FMM tourist card at most airports, so confirm what record you were given — digital or stamped — before you leave the airport.

For the beach destinations, May to early June and September to November are the value windows, with September and October carrying the highest hurricane risk. For Mexico City and Guadalajara the rainy season from June to September is cheapest. Avoid Christmas, Semana Santa and March spring break, when fares roughly double.

Cancún (CUN) for the Riviera Maya, though Tulum now has its own airport (TQO) that is worth pricing if that is your destination. Mexico City has two very different airports — Benito Juárez (MEX) close in, and Felipe Ángeles (NLU) well to the north — so check which one a cheap fare actually uses. Los Cabos (SJD) and Puerto Vallarta (PVR) serve the Pacific resorts.

Honestly, less than on our long-haul routes — this is a competitive market with genuinely keen public fares. Where we earn the call is the total cost: bag fees, seat fees and change fees on the low-cost carriers routinely exceed the fare difference, and for a family travelling heavy the headline bargain often is not one. We will tell you when a booking site already has the right price.
