Flying to the Dominican Republic: Punta Cana, Santo Domingo or Santiago?

More money is wasted on this route by booking the wrong airport than by booking the wrong fare. The Dominican Republic is not a small island — Punta Cana to Santiago is roughly four hours by road — and the four airports serve genuinely different parts of it.

Punta Cana (PUJ) — the resorts

If you are going to an all-inclusive on the Bávaro strip, this is your airport, and most of those resorts are within an hour of it. PUJ is also a pleasant place to land: it is largely open-air, and it is the one Dominican airport built primarily around tourism rather than around a city.

What it is not is close to anything else. Santo Domingo is about three hours west. Do not book PUJ because it had the cheapest fare and then discover your family is in the Cibao.

Santo Domingo (SDQ) — the capital

Las Américas serves the capital and the south, and sits about forty minutes east of the Zona Colonial. It has the widest schedule and often the best fares, which is exactly why people book it by default.

There is also a second, much smaller airport — La Isabela (JBQ) — considerably closer to the city, used mostly for domestic and regional flights. If a connection routes you through JBQ, check the transfer before you accept it.

Santiago (STI) — the Cibao

This is the airport most often overlooked and most often the right answer. Cibao International serves Santiago and the whole Cibao valley, and for a very large share of Dominican-American families — particularly those flying from New York and Boston — it is far closer to where they are actually going than Santo Domingo.

The fare into STI is sometimes higher than into SDQ. It is still frequently the cheaper trip once you count the drive, the fuel and the time.

Puerto Plata (POP) — the north coast

For Sosúa, Cabarete and the northern beaches. Smaller schedule, fewer US nonstops, but it saves a long transfer over the mountains if the north coast is your destination.

Before you book, two things that are not obvious

The tourist card is already paid. Most sites still describe it as a fee you settle on arrival. For the large majority of carriers its cost is now bundled into the airfare, so there is usually nothing to buy at immigration.

There is an electronic form, in both directions. The DR uses an online entry and exit form that should be completed before each flight. Do it at home. The queue of people filling it in on airport wifi is not one to join.

And the baggage question

This is one of the heaviest-baggage corridors flown from the United States, in both directions, and the airlines serving it know that. Excess and oversize fees are enforced closely and are far cheaper bought in advance than at the desk. If you are travelling with more than a carry-on, price the bags and the fare as one number — on this route the cheapest advertised ticket regularly is not the cheapest trip.
