Flights to the Dominican Republic — frequently asked questions
No visa is needed for tourism. A tourist card is required, but its cost is included in the airfare for most carriers, so there is usually nothing to buy on arrival despite what many sites still say. There is also an electronic entry and exit form to complete online before flying in each direction.
It depends entirely on where you are going, and the two are a long drive apart. Punta Cana (PUJ) serves the Bávaro resort strip. Santo Domingo (SDQ) serves the capital and the south. If you are heading to the Cibao valley, Santiago (STI) is much closer than either, and Puerto Plata (POP) covers the north coast. Getting this wrong costs more time than any fare saving is worth.
May, June and November are the value months with weather that is still good. December to April is the dry high season and the most expensive, with Christmas and New Year sharpest. Hurricane season runs June to November, concentrated in August through October — which is why late-summer fares are low.
It varies enormously by carrier, and this is one of the heaviest-baggage routes flown from the US in both directions. The low-cost airlines serving it charge aggressively for checked and oversize bags. Tell our agents what you are actually carrying before we quote — buying allowance in advance rather than at the airport is where we save you the most here.
