Flights to South America — frequently asked questions
Peru requires no visa for short tourist stays, though immigration grants a specific number of days on arrival rather than an automatic maximum — check what you were given. Brazil is the one to verify carefully: the visa requirement for US citizens has been reinstated and postponed several times in recent years. Confirm the current rule directly with the Brazilian consulate before booking, and apply early if one is needed.
The northern summer, June to August, is usually the value window because it is winter in the south. December to February is the southern summer and the domestic holiday peak, and Carnival in Brazil — normally February or early March — is the single sharpest fare spike of the year in both directions.
Fly into Lima (LIM), then take a domestic flight to Cusco (CUZ). Book that second leg on the same ticket where possible — it is generally cheaper and it protects you if the international flight is delayed. Allow at least a day to acclimatise before attempting the site, and consider spending it in the Sacred Valley, which is significantly lower than Cusco.
Frequently, yes. These are consolidator-rich corridors, the itineraries often combine an international and a domestic carrier, and the peaks around Carnival and the southern summer sell their cheap public fares out months ahead. Agents can also build open-jaw tickets — into one city and out of another — that booking sites price badly or not at all.
