Booking Tips

1 Complete the online Check-Mig immigration form before both departure and return — it is free and quick, and airlines do ask for it
2 Bogotá is at 8,600 feet and always cool; Cartagena is hot and humid year-round. Pack for the city, not the country
3 Medellín's airport is forty minutes outside the city up a mountain road — longer than most people plan for
4 Bogotá is the region's best connecting hub, so an onward domestic flight is usually cheap and frequent

Flights to Colombia — frequently asked questions

No visa is required for short tourist stays. You do need to complete the online Check-Mig immigration form shortly before both your outbound and return flights — it is free, takes a couple of minutes, and airlines check for it at the gate.

Bogotá (BOG) has the most flights, the best fares and the best onward connections to the rest of the country. Medellín (MDE) is the easier climate and increasingly the more popular trip. Cartagena (CTG) is the Caribbean coast and the walled colonial city, with more seasonal US service — outside the winter, connecting through Bogotá is often more reliable.

Bogotá and Medellín barely have seasons, so fares track the Colombian holiday calendar rather than the weather — avoid mid-December to mid-January and Semana Santa. For Cartagena the rainy months from May to November are considerably cheaper than the December-to-April dry season.

Often, yes. This is a consolidator-rich corridor where the published and wholesale fares diverge, particularly around the December peak when the cheap public buckets vanish months ahead. Agents can also reach inventory on regional carriers that US booking sites either do not show or show badly.
