Booking Tips

1 El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua share the CA-4 agreement — time in any of them counts toward the same permitted stay
2 December and Semana Santa are the family travel peaks and need booking months ahead from Los Angeles, Houston and Washington DC
3 El Salvador uses the US dollar, so there is no currency exchange to plan for
4 San Salvador has become a strong regional connecting hub — onward fares through SAL often beat routing via Panama or Mexico City

Flights to Central America — frequently asked questions

Neither requires a visa for tourism. El Salvador charges a small tourist card fee on arrival, payable in US dollars; confirm the current requirement with the consulate, as this arrangement has changed before. Guatemala requires no card. Both are part of the CA-4 agreement, so days spent in either count toward one shared permitted stay.

The rainy season from May to October is cheapest, and the rain is usually heavy afternoon storms rather than all-day weather. The dry season from November to April is the most reliable and the most expensive. December and Semana Santa are the sharpest peaks by a wide margin on these routes.

Guatemala City (GUA), which is unusual in sitting right inside the city. Antigua is about an hour away and is where most visitors actually stay. For Tikal in the northern jungle, flying to Flores (FRS) rather than driving saves the better part of a day in each direction.

These are heavy-baggage routes in both directions and the carriers price accordingly. The low-cost options that look cheapest have the tightest allowances, and excess fees at the airport are steep. We quote the fare and the bags as one number so the comparison is honest.
